Project Description

From The Ground-Up Workshop ‘Mastering Metering & Exposure’

A new date and location for this workshop will be announced soon.

From The Ground-Up Workshop ‘Mastering Metering & Exposure’

For all levels of photographer, this is a unique course in applying photography’s fundamentals.

How can you be a capable or ‘better’ photographer without them under your control? No camera yet made will get it right all of the time left to it’s own. And even if it appears to do a good job, how do you know it is the best?

This workshop is not just about the basics, but we start there, then moves onto the more advanced techniques.

Metering and the resulting exposure are skills often presumed to be the best, but changes made post capture prove that not to be.

Clearly explained in our usual, easy to follow ways, interesting practicals sessions help to cement the content. All of which is based and ‘road tested’ through decades of practice.

Suitable for the beginner who wishes to make rapid progress, the enthusiast and pro, wanting to enhance and cement their understanding of techniques, and improve their workflow.

We then look at ‘outside’ the box techniques and tools for those special situations or effects, perfect for the advanced user who feels held back by the limitations of doing things ‘by the book’.

This course can certainly save years of trial and error with its clarity and content, all within one day.

  • Understanding Metering – the principles it is based upon and why.
  • Metering – In camera metering options
  • Achieving professional standards of metering/exposure, how and why it is important.
  • Apertures, Shutter speeds & ISO. the real things you need to know about them.
  • Achieving the best auto exposures.
  • Maximising manual exposure – still the best for many situations – why and how.
  • Working under changeable and or time limited situations – what to prioritise @ capture.
  • How to achieve maximum quality when there is time for out of camera ready to roll images.
  • Measuring and using your cameras dynamic range and why it is important.
  • Using a ‘Hand Held’ light meter for ambient exposures.
  • Understanding and using a standard histogram.
  • Using your Red, Green and Blue Histograms.
  • Walking away with the best exposure.
  • Viewing – limitations and solutions.
  • Post Capture – how it is effected by what you capture.
  • Practical demonstrations and opportunities throughout as we explore the concepts.
  • Q & A throughout.

Thought I would just send your some feedback on the event I attended today at Calumet Drummond Street. Amazing. Apart from being a great photographer, John has the ability to teach too, able to convey complex issues in a clear and understandable way, which obviously requires great understanding of the subject matter. The structure and pace of the course was excellent, allowing time for questions whilst covering essential information during the day . Can’t believe I learnt so much in one day. And as a bonus John is such a kind, friendly guy whose enthusiasm is infectious. Well done Calumet for holding this seminar. Rating for course 10/10 – could not have wished for more in one day

Thanks for a great day today. You had a great team there and the location was top class – I am sure I could spend a full week there and not exhaust all the potential shooting options …… and it goes without saying it was great to be able to call upon your knowledge and experience to both qualify my personal learning and also expand my knowledge and ideas through your insight

Just a quick email to say a big thank you for all your hard work yesterday. It was just as you promised, a very interesting and rewarding day and whilst I haven’t had time to do more than unload the pictures to my PC, I have high hopes that there are some great ones there.  I really appreciate all the energy and enthusiasm you put into these courses and I hope that I will be able to retain all the knowledge!

Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed today’s workshop. John Clements was both engaging and informative and his relaxed style made everybody feel at ease and make the most out oftheir seminar experience. I had some doubts whether I would benefit much from the workshops, however within the first 5 minutes I soon realised that Johns experience and teaching skills was highlighting top-tips and important camera craft that will take my photography to another level.
